May brings two new exhibits to the Richmond-Miles Museum.
The first is an exhibit dedicated to Mother’s Day which includes several items specific to Caswell County that showcase artifacts that were used, made or given to honor a mother’s influence, family bonds and dedication. Now celebrated annually in the United States, Mother’s Day is May 9 this year. Though mothers have been appreciated since the beginning of time, the recognized observance was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. Mother’s are usually given gifts, which today include cards and flowers as a way of thanking them for all that they have done.
The second exhibit is in observance of Memorial Day which is May 31. This exhibit features photos and artifacts of some Caswell County residents who made the ultimate sacrifice during war times. Memorial Day is a U.S. holiday that is set for the last Monday in May and unlike Veterans Day which honors all who have served in the military, Memorial Day is specifically for honoring those who have died. Originally known as Decoration Day following the Civil War it eventually became known as Memorial Day and in 1971 became a federal holiday.
The Caswell County Historical Association and Richmond-Miles Museum welcome visitors to see this and other exhibits during operating hours which are currently Wednesdays from 1-4 pm.
